Report on
the MeaNs to Ends Conference
held in the University of
Nottingham on
Thursday 12
February 1998. The conference was attended by 32
participants from universities and various areas of employment.
The lead speakers were Anne Hawkins (RSS Centre), Peter
Holmes (MeaNs project) Peter
Collinson (Office
of National Statistics), Chris Mee (Millward Brown International),
Larry
Furlong (Zeneca),
Wal
Wallace (Sheffield
Hallam University), Malcolm Farrow (University of Sunderland)
and Richard Castle (University of Brighton).
The three speakers from the three major areas employing statisticians spoke on 'What I am looking for in a statistician'. Anne Hawkins and Peter Holmes spoke on different aspects of what had been discovered by the MeaNs project - in particular what had come from the various surveys, workshops and investigations and how they related to current university courses. The three speakers from the universities spoke on different aspects of university/employer co-operation with which they had been involved.
The last session was an open session on the title 'MeaNs by other means'.There was a wide ranging and lively discussion and active support for the principle that the work being done under the MeaNs heading was important and a desire that it should continue and grow.
The conference organisers are very grateful to SPSS who sponsored the conference since without this sponsorship it is unlikely that it would have taken place.
Details of the talks are on the MeaNs website at http://science.ntu.ac.uk../reports/confnott.html
