The Problem Solving Approach

What was the project?

This project was carried out by the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education at Nottingham Trent University between 1 March 2005 to 31 December 2006. It undertook a review of the statistics and data handling content of GCSE to determine what should be retained as part of the core curriculum for mathematics and what may be beneficially seeded for delivery through other subjects, particularly science.

A major set of statistically well-designed sample surveys were undertaken to compile the objective basic data from a suitable sample of schools. Data and information were collected from heads of mathematics, science and geography and pupils. A set of eight exemplar classroom teaching and learning resources that used a statistical problem approach were developed and an online assessment to assess understanding of the problem solving cycle was successfully trialled. The final report, in which eleven recommendations were made, was submitted to the QCA in December 2006. The eleven recommendations and executive summary can be found in the Outcomes section of this website.
